Overview
International School of English–Yokohama, Japan. A reputable English language school with a history of 25 years serving the local community is seeking talented professional motivated teachers for potential start dates from November/December 2019. We have two beautiful campuses located in Aobadai and Tama Plaza (Both campuses are located on the Denentoshi line just minutes from Tokyo and Central Yokohama). We are currently accepting applications from professional experienced teachers . Candidates must be native English speakers, hold a bachelor’s degree or the equivalent from an accredited university.
We are seeking teachers that have the ability and skill set to teach adults as well as children ,including young learners. Strong consideration will be given to candidates with previous teaching experience with adults, children and business courses. We welcome CELTA/TESOL/DELTA certificate holders as well as teachers holding traditional teaching credentials/licenses. We are also seeking teachers that have a strong technical teaching background in subject based lessons and feel comfortable teaching academic lessons such as History, Science, Social Studies, English Literature and Math. Candidates should possess the following:
Required soft skills - Personal qualities should include a positive attitude, professional demeanor and appearance, flexibility and the ability to work as a member of a closely-knit team. Candidates must have a strong work ethic and take pride in their profession and appearance as teachers. Candidates should be outgoing, communicative and energetic. This position requires a great deal of responsibility as well as a solid work ethic and polished people skills.
Teaching repertoire and skill set for applicants should include the ability to teach student centered lessons focusing on independent narrative, phonics and reading , role-plays as well as games and activities that re-enforce TL (target language being taught). Our teaching Methodology is student centered and focused on giving the students the confidence and skill set to produce independent output.
Please take note, we are seeking teachers that are enthusiastic about teaching children yet have the sophistication and experience to deliver academic based lessons to returnees and children that our enrolled in full English immersion courses at their schools. We cater to a great many students that have lived abroad and require traditional subject based lessons.

We offer both private and group lessons, each lasting 50 minutes, with no more than four students per group for children’s lessons and three students per group for adults lessons .We have a great number of our students taking private lessons and semi – private lessons as well .
Approximately a third of the children enrolled at ISE have returned from extended stays abroad and follow a subject-based curriculum (history, social studies, literature, etc.)
The schools provide the teacher with both a curriculum to follow as well as a wealth of support materials to enhance their lessons plans . Our schools are extremely well resourced and have an excellent range of course material for both children and adults. We also incorporate technology into the classroom and teachers have access to I Pad’s and lap tops during their lessons.
Responsibilities include:
Teachers must be able to give clear, focused and challenging lessons to a wide variety of students. Establishing a rapport with your students and creating a lesson dynamic that encourages the student to excel and achieve their goals. We do a great deal of test preparation for students challenging the following – SAT’s, ACT’s ,IELTS, EIKEN, TOEIC just to mention a few .We are also seeking teachers that have strong writing skills to assist students with essays and writing projects that are required by many overseas universities and schools in Japan.
Typical duties
- Charting the student’s progress reports regarding student’s performance.
- Communicating with the other staff members, as well as the School Managers, Head or Lead teachers, regarding students’ progress and abilities.
- Assisting with curriculum development and lesson planning
- Text book trials and Student evaluations
- Reporting student progress and providing input on future lesson plans
- Attending monthly staff meetings
- Participation in in-house trainings and teaching workshops
Benefits and Remuneration
Starting Salaries range from 250,000 to 280,000 yen a month depending on experience, qualifications and references. We are also able to offer performance bonuses and incentive bonuses as well as bonus holidays for applicants that show outstanding work performance. Additionally, we offer 30 days paid vacation including national holidays. We provide full visa sponsorship and can provide assistance with securing housing through our extensive network of agents. Take note that housing costs are the sole responsibility of the teacher. We also offer several options for extended health insurance coverage above and beyond that National health insurance that is quite excellent in Japan. We are seeking applicants that are interested in moving up the ladder and becoming managing teachers so we do promote staff based on work ethic, capability and commitment. Teaching contracts are one year with the option to renew annually.
