We would love to hear from anyone interested in teaching English in a small, well resourced school locating in the prefecture city_ Tongren, east of Guizhou Province, southwest of China

If you are an outgoing person and would like to teach young children, please join our school--Qihang English School in Tongren, the capital city of Tongren Prefecture, Guizhou province, China. We have 2 full time foreign teaching positions that will open in 2009. . Our school is the only private school licensed to employ foreigners in the whole prefecture of Tongren. The next term will start around the end of February. The wage is 100 yuan per hour and 20% of it will be held back by the school until successful completion of the contract by the foreign teacher. There will be no extra taxes removed from the wage.

What we offer:
1.        Your normal working hours are all day on the weekends and in the evenings during weekdays, which means that you will have plenty of time during the day to study Chinese or to travel around. Tongren has around 250,000 people, but because of the high density housing it only takes one hour to walk all the way across town. It is an inexpensive place to live, and very convenient. The countryside is only a 5 minute bike ride out of town. It is located in a very rural area. The nearest McDonalds is 5 hours by bus in Guiyang. There are few Western restaurants, and they are expensive. Foreigners are not a common sight for the local people, and often people will stare. This position will be very rewarding for someone who wants to immerse themselves in the real China. Unlike Shanghai or Beijing however, Tongren has few places that will seem just like your home country. There are a few other foreigners in town, but nothing like an ex-patriot community. Almost no one speaks English here, and many of the local people speak a dialect that is different from official Mandarin. This situation provides many benefits, but also many challenges. Please note these things when considering a foreign teaching position with Tongren Qihang. Please understand how difficult it is to recruit a teacher from another country, and how important it is for that teacher to be truly committed to completing a one-year contract.
2.        Accommodation is provided off campus in the city( 15 minutes from the school on foot), with basic facilities like TV, VCD, refrigerator, shower and kitchen tools etc. The school pays the monthly rent.
3.        A computer with internet connection will be at your disposal in your apartment, 200 yuan will be paid per month by the school to cover the cost of the phone bill and the electricity cost . Any amount more than 200 yuan will be paid by the foreign teacher.
4.        The school will arrange an optional two to three days trip around local province every six months, with all expenses paid.
5.        For 1 year contract we offer 7,000 RMB( $800) for the returned plane ticket ( available at the end of contract period). During the winter and summer holidays ( each lasts 3 weeks), you will be paid 1,000 RMB respectively.
6.        Medical insurance is not provided, but the cost of medical care is tremendously lower than is Western countries. The staff can help with coordinating and translating any medical appointments. We are seeking healthy applicants. The classes themselves are a physical effort, with the singing and gestures and sheer energy of a class of 5 year olds. 7.        Our school can help you find activities in your new home. The foreign teacher can be provided a Chinese Teacher for learning Chinese Mandarin 4 hours a week, in a learning partnership where the foreign teacher will also help the Chinese teacher learn English. The school can organize calligraphy learning, Chinese Kongfu learning, Chinese cooking and other skill training but the foreign teacher must pay the tuition for these activities. The cost for each item will be about 200 yuan per month.
What we require of you:
1. At least BA or BSc degrees, TESOL trained teacher preferred but not essential.
2. Teaching experience an advantage.
3. Some Chinese language skills an advantage but not required.
4. If you are a fluent English speaker, your country of origin is of no importance.

Job description:
1.        Students are between 5 and 17 years old, with none or a very low level of English skills. Each class consists of a maximum of 26 children within 3 years age of each other. Student regularly have Qihang English classes twice a week with their Chinese English teachers. The foreigner teachers will have many different classes, but they will only meet with each individual class once every two weeks. The foreign teacher should have around 24 teaching hours per week, but it is variable. 2.        Monthly one-day trips out of Tongren to teach at Qihang branch schools in nearby towns will be required. Each town is about two hours from Tongren.
3.        3 levels of English courses are handled in this school, Playway to English is for children between 5 to 8, Cambridge Young Learners English for children between 9 to 11 years old and New Concept English for those between 12 to 17 years old.
4.        Teaching must be exercised in a playful manner. Be prepare to sing and dance, and make a fool of yourself. The Qihang method of teaching English to small children relies heavily on gestures and body language. The favored method of teaching is by playing games. The use of picture cards, videos and singing is preferred. You are required to be able to play educational games with the students for half of the class time. There will be a co-operation with a Chinese speaking teacher, who will go through the context of the teaching material beforehand with the children. The foreign teacher will be trained in the Qihang method, and work closely with each Chinese teacher to learn the words, songs, gestures, and games associated with each specific lesson. The foreign teachers role is to review and improve material previously taught by the student's Chinese teacher. The main task for the native teacher is teaching the kids to practice speaking and listening to English. The most important advantage of a native English teacher is the ability to correct students’ pronunciations and create conversational English resulting from the text books.
5.        Teachers will be expected to act in a kind and professional manner. Working with small children can be stressful. The Chinese teachers can assist the foreign teacher with class room discipline. There will not always be a Chinese teacher in the foreign teacher's class, except during the training period and when requested by the foreign teacher. To be a successful teacher to these young kids, you must be able to bring a smile and a playful attitude to each new class. When you apply for a Qihang teaching position, please reflect on your attitude towards children and your previous teaching experiences.
