 About British Council Thailand

The organization’s work in Thailand includes a large English operation with six teaching centers and a growing number of partner school operations. Its main office is in Siam Square, Bangkok and it also has locations across the capital’s metropolitan area and in and around the city of Chiang Mai.

Approximately 4,500 young learners attend courses at British Council teaching centers in Thailand, where they receive expert guidance to further their English ability and help in their development as confident, well-rounded, and expressive individuals. There are also 2,500 adult learners attending programs such as myClass, which allows students to take control of their learning by choosing content relevant to their learning needs as well as the time and location of their classes.

In addition to operations taking place on the organization’s own premises, English language teaching is also provided at a number of educational institutions with which partnerships have been established. There are currently six such partner school operations, with three in Bangkok and three in Chiang Mai, each with British Council managers, instructors, teaching assistants, and support staff working together to deliver programs in accordance with the schools’ particular requirements. These can range from supplementary after-school English courses to the delivery in full of the school’s English curriculum within its timetable, while also being involved in school events and offering extracurricular activities such as clubs and competitions.

The organization also works with several Thai and British universities to provide seasonal support to their students with the development of EAP (English for Academic Purposes) skills, including preparation for the IELTS academic paper. 

 

Vacancy locations 

Regina Coeli College is a primary and secondary school for girls that was founded by Catholic missionaries in 1932. It is situated near the center of Chiang Mai and is a stone’s throw from the Ping river, not far from the British Council teaching center. Some of its buildings are deemed heritage sites and are listed as being of historical and cultural importance.  

The British Council’s partnership program began in 2011 and since then a strong bond has been established between the organization and its staff with the school and its students. The program is incorporated into the school’s timetable and provides English tuition to over 1,000 students in the school’s primary and pre-primary (K3) sections. IELTS preparation courses are also delivered to upper secondary students on a seasonal basis.  

 

Core Teaching Duties (Career Level 2 Global Standard)

• Plan, prepare and deliver high-quality English language teaching that recognizes the varying needs of learners and meets the minimum criteria of Teaching Skills level 1 (c.f. accompanying guide).
• Monitor student progress and provide regular feedback throughout the academic year while actively promoting learner autonomy.
• Contribute – as a key member of the academic team in Bangkok – to the preparation, evaluation and further development of the offsite English language programmes run by the British Council, helping ensure that the host stakeholders’ requirements are met in alignment with the organisation’s pedagogic values and approaches.
• Complete all teaching-related administrative tasks to specified standards.

Higher teaching duties (Career Level 3 Global Standard)

Further to the above duties and accountabilities for Career Level 2:

• Plan, prepare and deliver high-quality English language teaching that is exemplary in nature, meeting higher ELT standards as per Teaching Skills level 2 (more demanding).
• Contribute to the organization’s goals and objectives pertaining to teaching and learning standards by: (i) demonstrating both the willingness and the ability to provide a wide range of ELT-related activities as determined by operational requirements, and (ii) supporting less experienced colleagues, both informally and by providing training and mentoring as required.

 

Requirements (Career Level 2)

• High proficiency in English: i.e. Full mastery of English across all four skills, equivalent to CEFR C2 and IELTS band 8/9 (in each of the four sections of the academic version of the test).
• Undergraduate university degree or equivalent.
• Recognized certificate in EFL: CELTA, Trinity cert TESOL or equivalent.      
• A minimum of 1,200 contact hours’ experience gained from teaching two or more of the following age groups: 
• Young learners aged 4 to 7
• Young learners aged 8 to 12
• Young learners aged 13 to 17
• Adults (aged 18+)

 

Requirements (Career Level 3)

• Undergraduate university degree or equivalent.
• TEFL-Q status: delta, Trinity DipTESOL, or equivalent.
• Four years’ full-time post-certificate (i.e. Celta, trinity certTESOL or equivalent) experience gained from teaching a variety of age groups and levels (young learners and adults).
• A minimum 1,200 contact hours’ experience gained from teaching two or more of the following age groups: 
• Young learners aged 4 to 7
• Young learners aged 8 to 12
• Young learners aged 13 to 17
• Adults (aged 18+)   

 

Passport requirements/ right to work in-country

All offers will be conditional on the issuing of a working visa and work permit by the relevant local authorities and the approval of the appointment by the partner school(s) to which the employee is assigned.

The British Council cannot sponsor working visas for instructors’ partners (unless they are also employees) but will offer guidance on applying for a spouse or dependent visas for partners and family members where possible.

Additional vacancy information

Candidates considering applying for positions in Chiang Mai should be aware that at certain times of year – and in particular during March and April – smoke haze can cause PM 2.5 counts, with air pollution reaching levels deemed ‘unhealthy’ and on occasion ‘hazardous’ to those insensitive group brackets. This could include those with respiratory issues and other vulnerable demographics such as children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems.

Candidates are therefore encouraged to consult the Health section of the Thailand page of the Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office’s travel advice website, the World Air Quality Index page for Chiang Mai, and the website of the Royal Thai Government’s Pollution Control Department.

 It should also be noted that air quality in Chiang Mai significantly improves after April and usually falls into the World Health Organisation’s target air quality bracket throughout the monsoon season so that the city’s overall yearly average tends to achieve a rating of ‘moderate’.
