About Go Teach

We are a UK company set up by a group of expats with a combined 20 years of teaching and business experience in China. As foreigners living in China, we can offer advice to anyone wishing to come and work here, whether you have questions about life in China or about teaching itself. We’ve been matching teachers to the best jobs in China for the past 5 years, so we have a very good understanding of the ESL market here and a good eye for finding excellent offers for candidates.

About Teaching in China

Teaching in China is an excellent opportunity. It is one of the hottest ESL markets in the world right now, and the high salaries, excellent benefits, and relatively low cost of living combines to allow those who take up this opportunity to really redefine the path of their life.

If saving money is important to you, perhaps for investment, to buy a house, or to pay off debt back home then this is something that is very achievable as an ESL teacher. How much you save obviously depends on your lifestyle, but as a general rule you should have at least 50% of your income left over after your basic costs (housing, food, transport, utilities, etc). As many of the positions here offer a free apartment it is easy to see how you can really make your income stretch a lot further than you could back home. How you spend this discretionary income really depends on your own preferences.

If you want to make the most of being in Asia and travel during your free time, then China is an ideal base for doing so. Low cost airlines such as Air Asia and China Southern Airlines have flights going to many Chinese cities, as well as to Japan, South Korea, Thailand, the Philippines, Malaysia, etc. All of these destinations are just a few hours away by plane, and maybe 100 - 200 USD for a return ticket depending on the time of year. So, it is extremely convenient and affordable to travel around Asia and any teachers take advantage of this and go on holiday several times per year.

China in 2019 is a very different place to even 10 years ago. In any big city (basically every first or second tier city) there is a large expat population, so there are plenty of other foreigners to meet and hang out with. China is super-modern and has everything you are used to from back home, just mixed together with Chinese culture. This makes for a very unique cultural experience but also means that you don’t have such a ‘bumpy’ culture shock as you would have moving here in the past, as it is a lot easier to navigate China today.
