Overview
API is pleased to share this new opportunity to teach abroad in China, which offers a budget-friendly way for study abroad alumni, teachers, or professionals to enrich their personal lives while gaining teaching experience abroad.
We offer several options for teaching placements in China, including a paid teaching option, and a homestay teaching option (with stipend).
For the paid teaching option, placements are available to teach English in primary and secondary schools.
Participants are required to teach 20-25 classroom hours and put in an additional 15-20 hours of classroom prep, grading, office hours, and staff meetings per week.
English training is an important step to help locals succeed in school, find better jobs, and improve communication in the global market. This program will not only give you invaluable international work experience but will also help the Chinese population improve their lives!
The homestay teaching option is an all-inclusive program that integrates educational travel, English teaching and tutoring, childcare, travel, and formal Mandarin lessons. A hybrid between English tutoring and Au Pairing, participants become an elder sibling to children of a Chinese family for 3-12 months, while offering extra English language support.
HIGHLIGHTS - PAID TEACH PROGRAM
*Guaranteed position to teach English to Chinese primary and secondary school students
*Dates: 6-month minimum. Apply by mid-February for August/September-January placements.
*20-25 hours/week teaching, plus additional time on related tasks (lesson planning, meetings, extracurricular activities, etc.)
*Local salary paid to teacher = roughly 6500 RMB/month
*Placements located throughout the following provinces: Jiangsu, Guangdong, Zhejiang
HIGHLIGHTS - HOMESTAY TEACH PROGRAM
*Duration: 3-12 months
*30 hours per week tutoring English and helping care for children in the household while living with a Chinese family
*Receive monthly living stipend
*International flights included in program cost for up to 12000 RMB (roughly 2,000 USD)
*Mutual selection of host family pre-departure
*Flexible start dates available year-round
*Placements located in the Paris of China, Shanghai
REQUIREMENTS
*Note: participants in the paid teach program must be 21-50 years old and have a Bachelor’s degree and TEFL certificate (or 2 full years of teaching experience). For those participants without a TEFL certificate, a 120-hour online TEFL course is available for an additional cost.
*Note: participants in the homestay teach program must be 18-28 years old, possess a high school diploma, and pass a background check).

DEADLINES
*Applications are accepted on a rolling basis. We recommend you apply at least 12 weeks before your program start to have sufficient time to get your placement, obtain your visa and make your plans.
*If you need to take a TEFL course as well, we recommend you apply earlier to give yourself time to earn certification (proof of certification required 8 weeks prior to the program start).
WHAT’S INCLUDED
*API advisor to assist you with all pre-departure needs, including visa assistance, and liaise with partner throughout program
*Airport pick-up / arrival assistance
*International airfare up to 12000 RMB - roughly $2,000 USD, and a monthly living stipend - homestay program only
*Housing and Meals (Your host school will provide you with basic, clean, comfortable furnished housing in a teachers' apartment or dormitory. They will also provide 3 meals Mon-Fri or a food allowance.) Participants in the homestay teach program will live with a Chinese family and have meals provided.
*Medical, Life, and Travel Insurance
*On-site program orientation (3 days in Beijing - for paid teach program)
*On-site support from partner and host school (and/or API Resident Coordinator if placed in Shanghai)
PROGRAM FEE
*Paid teach program - $600 (additional cost for those taking the 120-hour online TEFL course)
*Homestay teach program - $625
